When using a breast pump, finding the right fit for your nipple is key to a comfortable and effective experience. If your funnel (flange) size feels too large, you may need a funnel insert to help it fit better. But what exactly is a funnel insert, and how do you know if you need one?

What Is a Funnel Insert?

A funnel insert is a small, silicone accessory designed to reduce the size of your breast pump’s funnel. It helps the funnel fit your nipple more snugly if the standard size is too large. By using the correct size funnel or funnel insert, you can improve comfort, prevent nipple injury, and boost milk flow.

Do I Need a Funnel Insert?

The need for a funnel insert depends on your nipple size. For example, if you have a 25mm funnel but your nipple size is 15mm, the funnel is too big, and a funnel insert can help. In this case, you could use a 21mm funnel insert inside the 25mm funnel to get a better fit.

However, if your nipple size is closer to 19mm or 20mm, the 25mm funnel may already be a good fit, and you won’t need a funnel insert. In this case, you can use the funnel directly without any adjustments.

Important Note: Nipple Rulers Are Just a Guide

While nipple rulers are helpful for estimating your size, personal experience is often more accurate. For example, if your nipple measures 15mm, the ruler may suggest using a 21mm funnel or insert. However, if you find that using a 25mm funnel is more comfortable and gives you better milk supply, then the 25mm funnel is the right size for you. Always trust how your body feels during pumping.

Benefits of Using the Right Funnel or Funnel Insert

Using the correct size funnel or funnel insert can lead to:

  • Comfortable pumping with no pain
  • Better milk flow and supply
  • No nipple injuries

If you experience pain, reduced milk supply, or nipple injury, remeasure your nipple size and consider trying different funnel or funnel insert sizes.

How to Choose the Right Funnel Insert Size

Here’s how you can choose the right funnel insert size for your breast pump:

  1. Measure your nipple size (measure the base of the nipple, not the areola).
  2. Compare your nipple size to your funnel size.
  3. If the funnel is too large, use a funnel insert to reduce the size. For instance, if you have a 25mm funnel and your nipple size is 15mm, use a 21mm funnel insert to make the funnel fit better.

Using the right funnel insert can make a significant difference in your comfort and milk expression. Be sure to consult the manufacturer’s sizing guide for personalized advice.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Pain during pumping: Recheck your funnel or funnel insert size.
  • Low milk supply: The wrong fit can reduce milk flow. Adjust the funnel or insert size to improve milk production.
  • Nipple injuries: Redness, blisters, or soreness could indicate the need for a better-fitting funnel or insert.
